Climate-KIC Accelerator: Innovative solutions to climate change

The Climate-KIC Accelerator is an EU-wide, three-stage programme that supports green and cleantech startup companies. It provides a package of support over a number of months to help the participating companies develop, prototype and take to market new products and services that help to reduce our impact on the environment.

Birmingham City University were leading Stage 2 of the Accelerator in Birmingham (UK) and brought in Viatic to provide expertise in running an open innovation process within a defined innovation framework, to form the backbone of a week-long Open Innovation Lab. Viatic were instrumental in designing and delivering the Open Innovation Lab, in partnership with Birmingham City University, Media Lab Prado (Madrid) and Sampad (Birmingham).

We used our tried and tested innovation framework and extensive experience in running collaborative open innovation events to help craft an intensive, experiential seven days, where fourteen businesses worked together and underwent a rapid development of their products and business plans.

This included receiving dedicated innovation and problem solving support, advice on innovation practice plus coaching & mentoring sessions to help them develop their own business skills and understanding, as well as improving their business models and strategies.

As a resuilt, all the businesses in the programme that year were successful in reaching the required standard to secure grant funding from Cliamte-KIC and progress to Stage 3 of the Accelerator, where they took their products to market.
